Our History
Guiding began in the United Kingdom in 1909, an offshoot of Lord Robert
Baden-Powell’s Boy Scouts. It started out as a series of games for young people to learn and explore the countryside around them. With his wife, Olave Baden-Powell he travelled the world promoting the ideals of
Guiding and Scouting.
Guiding was introduced to Canada in 1910 with scattered Units across the
country. Since then Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada has developed into a completely national organization of 230,000 members, with Units in most communities in every province and territory.
Guides Canada is a voluntary organization that promotes the emotional,
physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being of girls and women through values-based programs.
Through age appropriate programs, Guiding develops a girl’s skills in:
- camping and the outdoors
- life skills
- leadership
and involves her in a wide variety of activities:
- the environment
- active living
- citizenship
- international
- community service.
